On About Christmas

We went to York to meet Father Christmas at the top of Clifford’s Tower. The closer we got to York the thicker the fog became. Upon arrival, we climbed the steps up to Clifford’s Tower and then up the narrow, twisting staircase to where Father Christmas had finished telling stories to the boys, girls, and Asian tourists. Isaac and Luke were a little nervous, but managed to say hello. We walked with St. Nick along to top of the tower waving to all the people arriving for the St Nicholas Fayre Market.

I was able to take two days off of work for Dionne and I to travel down to Stratford-upon-Avon to attend Romeo and Juliet by the Royal Shakespeare Company. We visited the Anne Hathaway Cottage--the childhood home of Shakespeare's wife. The home was picture perfect as a quintessential old English cottage. Our tour guide had us sit on the settle seat next to the fireplace which tradition holds that William and Anne also sat while courting. This is suspect based on the piece being dated from a later time period and the fact that Anne was twenty-six years old and pregnant, while William was only eighteen when they rushed to marry. There was probably not an open courtship as William was a “boy toy,” our guide explained. Afterwards, we strolled in and out of the shops in Stratford on our way to the Courtyard Theatre.

Finally, we've had our first real snow since arriving in England. Five or more inches before Christmas. We built a snowman and used Hersheys Kisses for the eyes, biscuit for the nose, and pretzels for the mouth. As I was shoveling the walkway, I hear Isaac yell, "Daaaad, Luke ate the snowman's face!" Dionne made us hot soup and sandwiches for lunch with a few snowman eyes and noses for dessert.

Grandpa & Marmee Visit Part 2: England

On the second part of our travels with Grandpa and Marmee, we came back to England for some medieval fun.
A few tips when travelling in England:

1. Stay up-wind when juggling torches.

2. Make sure you have wellies and a jacket before storming any castles.

3. Be careful...ginger beer can be addicting.

4. And finally, never give a two-year-old a sword (plastic or otherwise) while your trying to watch a joust.

Spring has Sprung

Here are a few early Spring pictures:

The daffodils have bloomed at Clifford's Tower and along the city walls of York.

Rush hour traffic in Derbyshire.

St. James church in Birstwith.

Spring brings twin lambs trotting after their mother. Reminds me of two boys I know, with more running and less following.

Climbing the rocks and ruins of Bolton Abbey in Wharfdale.

Rock plunking in the River Wharf. So many rocks, so little time to watch them go plunk!

York after Boxing Day

We finished our tour of York today by visiting the York Minster, walking along the city wall, riding the Yorkshire Wheel, and touring the National Railway Museum.

Lendal Bridge was built by Thomas Page in 1863

Christmas in York

Hi All,

We spent the day in York strolling through the Christmas market and touring the Jorvik Viking Center. This is Clifford's Tower, the only section of York Castle still intact besides the outer city wall.

One of the carnival-style rides...Isaac had a big smile plastered to his face the entire time.

Santa's helpers.

The pub we ate at for lunch. A traditional English meal...roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, fried potatoes, steamed veggies...all smothered in gravy. And a side order of chips for the boys.

I spy food...
